Sound without the noise complaint

Good sound keeps a session moving. Bad sound gets the whole garden shut down. Know the difference.

Sound is part of the scene - it's in the name. But a garden lives or dies by its neighbors, and one bad afternoon of bass can undo a season of goodwill. The goal is sound that fills your space and stops at its edges. That's a solvable engineering problem, not a vibe sacrifice.

Placement does more than volume. Point speakers into the garden and toward the crew, away from the nearest housing - sound is directional, and the difference between a speaker facing a wall of windows and one facing away from it is enormous. Keep speakers low to the ground rather than raised; height makes sound carry. Walls, hedges, and sheds at your back act as baffles. On a rooftop, remember you're broadcasting in every direction with no obstacles - go quieter than feels necessary.

Run one source. Multiple speakers playing different things turn a garden into a food court, and everyone unconsciously cranks their own to compete. One rig, one queue, shared aux. The host or a designated person holds final volume say, and that's a rule worth stating out loud at the start of a session.

Match volume to the clock. Daytime working hours buy you the most tolerance; early evening some; after 22:00 in most cities you're legally as well as socially in the wrong - many municipalities have specific quiet hours, so know yours. The honest test: walk to the nearest neighbor's window. If you can clearly hear your own music there, you're too loud, whatever the hour. Bass deserves special paranoia - it travels through buildings and ground in ways treble doesn't, so when you turn down, turn the low end down first.

Battery rigs are the right tool for this scene. A decent battery speaker or a portable power station running a small system means no cables across paths, no begging for outlet access, no generator drone fighting your own music. Size the battery honestly: check the speaker's wattage against the battery's watt-hours and you'll know if it survives a four-hour session or dies during the best track. Charge everything the night before; a rig at 20% sets the session's countdown timer.

Make neighbors stakeholders, not victims. Tell adjacent buildings when sessions happen and give them a phone number that actually gets answered - a neighbor who can text 'bit loud today' and see the volume drop within a minute will basically never call the authorities. Invite them over. The retired guy from the third floor who came for the tomatoes and stayed for the music is worth more than any soundproofing.

And when someone asks you to turn it down - turn it down, immediately, without litigation. Arguing the decibels wins you nothing and costs the garden everything. The crew that's easy to live next to is the crew that's still there next season, speakers and all.
